Access to Campus
As of April 30, 2024, access to Barnard's campus is limited in the interest of our community's safety. Please see below for campus access details. Barnard students, faculty, and staff should also refer to email communications from Senior Staff and Community Safety regarding the most up-to-date protocol.
- One Point of Entrance. Our gate at 117th Street and Broadway remains our single open point of entrance. When this changes, we will let you know.
- Milstein Library Hours. The Milstein Library will be closing at 7:00 pm through Thursday evening. We are looking into expanding hours through the remainder of the final exam period and will update you with additional information as it becomes available.
- Barnard Access Only. Barnard’s campus is currently restricted to those holding a valid BCID and all in-person events are for the Barnard community only. The Barnard campus is currently not open to Columbia University students, faculty or staff.
- Visitors to campus remain limited. Any visitor request must be submitted using the Guest Request Access form on Workday. Campus visitors will be granted access for critical operational functions and certain academic events with prior approval from divisional leaders. We are closely monitoring outside vendors that come to our campus and limiting attendance at meetings.
- Residence Hall Access. Visitors to residence halls will be allowed only for move-out assistance in order to facilitate the end of semester moving process. Students living in the Quad should use the Guest Request Access form to ensure their move-out assistant(s) is able to access the main campus. Move-out assistants for students living in off-campus residence halls will use the guest registration form at the access attendant desk and then get a guest sticker from the access attendant. Non-BCID overnight guests are currently not permitted in residence halls.

Executive Summary
Access to the Barnard College main campus will be restricted during late-night hours to individuals holding valid Barnard College or Columbia University identification credentials. The main campus is bounded by Broadway, Claremont Avenue, 116th Street, and 120th Street.
Reason for the Policy
In order to protect the safety and security of the college community, and in consideration of the very limited number of college-sponsored classes or events during late-night hours, campus access will be monitored and controlled.

All persons seeking access to the campus between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
Policy Statement
On a daily basis, beginning at 11:00 p.m., access will be restricted to the main gate at 117th and Broadway and the link gate at 119th and Claremont. All persons entering the campus must pass through those gates. Access will be permitted only to those presenting a valid Barnard College or Columbia University identification badge. Guests without such credentials are permitted with an escort; escorts must hold a valid Barnard College or Columbia University identification badge.
Procedure
- At 11:00 p.m., Community Safety will close all gates and access to the campus, with the exception of the main gate at 117th and Broadway and the link gate at 119th and Claremont. At the main gate, one leaf of the gate will be closed.
- Any person seeking to enter the campus after 11:00 p.m. will be requested to present valid Barnard College or Columbia University I.D. Upon validation of the I.D., the person will be permitted to enter the campus.
- If a person does not have a valid I.D., they will not be permitted access. However, if they are accompanied by a person with a valid I.D., they may enter as a guest.
- At 6:00 a.m., all gates will reopen and the campus will return to normal open access.
